I visited your house in Agrigento,

Contrada Caos, SS 115,

Not far from the Valley of the Temples,

On a hill sloping to the African

Sea, known for its olive groves and oak trees

And the iconic singular pine tree ...

You can’t breathe here, but suffer if you must

In atmosphere — I smell African heat

And tangerines, or sanguine oranges.

A Sicilian fly whirls around my head.

I peel a red prickly pear in your honour

— Carefully. I eat it without breathing ...

Ten years have passed and I still think about

Your desk, intact with notes and photographs,

And how I was undignified and brute

Enough to dribble prickly pear juice

On the desk ... The eyes of the six other

People in the tour group all twitched at once ...
